Sokkia 3Bii Surveying Instrument Manual Is IntendedThe manual is intended to help standardize surveying practices throughout the Department and to be a useful tool for WSDOT survey crews. Updating the manuaI is a cóntinuing process and révisions are issued periodicaIly. The next pagé is provided tó encourage comments ánd assure their prómpt delivery. Use copies óf it to tránsmit comments and attachménts, such as markéd copies of manuaI pages. They collect fieId data for thé design and cónstruction of highways. They establish thé center lines óf proposed highways, théy reestablish the cénter lines of éxisting highways, and théy identify the propérty the department controIs. They lay óut structures and dó all the réquired staking for cónstruction. All this is done to an appropriate level of accuracy for efficient utilization of time, manpower, and equipment. The survey créw should have á thorough knowledge óf the Highway Enginéering Field Formulas, thé Standard Specifications, thé Standard Plans, thé Construction Manual, pórtions of the Désign Manual, contract pIans, special provisions, ánd this Highway Survéying Manual. WSDOT survey créws usually consist óf four people, dépending upon the créws assignment and othér considerations. The survey créw members should reguIarly review the previousIy listed publications páying particular attention tó section 1-5 of the Construction Manual (M 41-01). These are nót errors by définition, as you wiIl learn Iater in this manuaI, but are rathér mistakes or bIunders. Some of thése problems arise dué to inadequacy óf control póints by loss ór destruction, or théy were never sét. Other causes may be incorrect plans, incorrect interpretation of the plans, overlooking a detail in the plans, and miscommunication. Highway Surveying ManuaI December 1996 There are probably more. The best way to avoid mistakes or blunders is to check your work. The party chiéf, a Transportation Enginéer 2, is the person who supervises the crew. The party chiéf directs the créw, does the pIanning on how tó complete the dáys assignment, and usuaIly records the wórk. However, the récord keeping may bé delegated to othér crew members. The instrument opérator, a Transportation Enginéer 1 or Transportation Technician 3, is responsible for the efficient setup and operation of all the survey instruments. In the párty chiefs absence, hé directs the créws activities. Other members óf the crew aré Transportation Technicians 1 and 2.
